Here's a glowing review of our friends The Night from Big Western Flavor, surely the hardest working review blog in Austin:
The Night, as discussed some Demo Sweats previously, have a heavy Joy Division jones. When I first listened to their recordings, I didn't think they were entirely without merit. They've picked a difficult style to play in effectively, and although not original their early songs were intelligently written. They had chorus hooks and lyrics that related to the music well, enhancing the feeling of wee-hours mixed exhaustion and elation that's key to this lean, speedy style. As a live band they're a few steps further along the path than I expected they would be. First of all, they're really solidly together as a band. Zafer Hamza is exceptionally good at playing the bass (with his fingers!) and singing at the same time. He doesn't just pound the rhythm, but he often provides the principal melodies while keeping meter too. Drummer Nick Welp deserves praise for both his technique and his willingness to play very simply but for just the right moments. In getting to hear a whole set's worth of music, I started to hear some different, non-Mancunian influences creeping in, particularly in Troy Hooper's guitar playing. Not a lot of fingerpicking on Joy Division's records. They should nurture those seeds to be sure.
I've been doing some illustrations lately for posters and fliers. I thought I'd share with you some of those pictures and some of the original drawings.
They all feature WRS' mascot, a sexy robot girl named Nika.
Here is the latest poster, for WRS at Carousel Lounge on April 3:

And here is the original B&W illustration:
It's a blast drawing these pictures. I hope that they help create a cool, sexy, fun image for the band!
I knew I forgot something! I meant to attend the SXSW Guitar Show at the convention center yesterday, but I couldn't make it.
Here's the lovely miss Kitty Korvette at the Pro-Tone pedals booth:

Just wanted to give a shout-out to everyone who came to Nomad last night!
The show felt great to us, and everyone seemed to have a good time, dancing and drinking and enjoying the sounds of Austin's premier nerdwave power trio.
We played through a pretty-rough version of Big Star's "September Gurls" after learning it over the previous two days.
I sang "She thinks she's got it going on" which is probably about someone you know. Reed sang an ode to not being dead (called "I'm Not Dead". We were going to call it "Staying alive" but that was already taken).
And we sang the ballad of "Summer", about Summer Glau, the girl who is more than just a "Killer From The Future".
I really got to put my new Rickenbacker 12-string through its paces, although I missed using my Casino, which stayed behind and was lonely at home.
All in all a really fun show.
Rich Restaino & The Obits played as well, and if you have not seem them, please do yourself a favor and make an effort to do so! They're a rich blend of Sixties' girl-group harmony styles and Seventies guitar pop and they are just a fun band.
They just released a new album recently called "We're All In This Thing Together". Pick it up!
WRS' next show is in two weeks, at Carousel Lounge on Saturday, April 3 at 9:30pm. We're opening for Jennifer ellen Cook and we are really looking forward to that show!
Isaac
P.S. I do not know why Jennifer's middle name is lowercase, but perhaps we can find out?
